Description

I am Matthew Gould, a Winnipeg criminal defence lawyer. I was called to the bar in 2008 and practised at Brodsky & Company before opening my own practice. Impaired driving defence is a core part of my work.

Impaired driving defence in Winnipeg

An impaired driving allegation can affect far more than your licence. A conviction brings a criminal record, a driving prohibition, higher insurance costs and possible problems at work and at the border. Impaired driving law also fills a large part of the Criminal Code and changes often, so it pays to have a lawyer who follows the current decisions.

I defend impaired driving, over 80 and refusal charges, and I look closely at roadside testing, the breath or blood demands and whether your rights were respected. I also defend drug, domestic assault, theft and violent crime charges, and I act at bail hearings.

I offer a free consultation and 24-hour availability. Payment by credit card, cash, e-transfer or retainer is accepted.

My practice areas

  • Impaired Driving Defence
  • Over 80 and Refusal
  • Drug Offences
  • Domestic Assault
  • Violent Crime and Theft
  • Bail Hearings

Where I help

My office is on the 12th floor at 363 Broadway, across from the Manitoba Law Courts, and I represent clients across Manitoba.

Charged with impaired driving in Winnipeg? Key facts

From Manitoba DUI Lawyers: most impaired driving stops in Manitoba now begin with an Immediate Roadside Prohibition. A “fail” on a roadside screening device, or a refusal, brings a three-month licence suspension, a $700 administrative penalty, vehicle impoundment, a 10-level drop on the Driver Safety Rating scale and a year in the Ignition Interlock Program. A “warn” reading of .05 to .079 brings a suspension of 72 hours to 60 days and a penalty of at least $400. See Manitoba DUI penalties. You can apply to MPI for a review of the suspension, and police can still lay Criminal Code charges, which go to court separately. Penalties are tougher for serious cases: a second conviction for impaired driving causing death or injury within 10 years now brings a lifetime licence suspension.
